Trip to New York City - May 30, 2009

Cost: $50 before coffee sales fundraising

The purpose of this trip is to explore the history of immigration to New York City from the early 20th century to present day.

First, we will visit Ellis Island to learn about the European immigrants of the early 20th century. The ferry will also stop at the Statue of Liberty, where we will get a close look at the symbol of America freedom that greeted immigrants upon their arrival. Then, we will see a Spanish play which explores the difficulties that immigrants currently face in coming to this country. Finally, we will stop for a couple of hours at Roosevelt Avenue, commonly known as Avenida de las Américas, to explore the wide variety of shopping and dining options at this commercial and cultural center for immigrants from all over Latin America. Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador are heavily represented here. We will also see several landmarks along the way such as the Dominican neighborhood in Washington Heights and the largest immigration court in the country.

Trip to NYC 2008

LA GRINGA in NYC on Saturday, March 1st

Teachers: I am elated to hear that the trip to NYC was fabulous! Eric and Maria kept me informed during the day as I was happy to hear that things were going great and that the students were well-behaved. Thank-you, Jessica, for organizing the trip and for including so many students and colleagues! I also want to thank Ruth and Maria who put in many hours of their time to assist Jessica in organizing and fundraising. Again, thanks to Jessica, Ruth, Maria, Eric, Ellie, Amy, Martin, and John for taking your Saturday to offer the 90 EHHS students an opportunity to enjoy the Spanish production of La Gringa, as well as enjoy the sites of NYC. Great work!
